Who is the trainer behind McGuire Performance Horses?

The founder and head trainer is Ethan McGuire. He has been passionate about training horses, especially starting colts, since he was a child. He founded this business to pursue his lifelong goal of building great performance horses from their very first ride. His methods are built on patience, consistency, and a deep, intuitive understanding of the young horse's mind. His growing reputation is built not on boasting, but on the quiet, confident, and well-started horses that come out of his program.

Our Philosophy & The Training Process

How It Works": The McGuire Performance Horses Method

What is your training philosophy?

Our philosophy is simple: build the horse's confidence first. We believe that a confident horse is a willing and trainable partner. We use a progressive, step-by-step approach that ensures the horse understands and is comfortable with each lesson before moving to the next. We use clear communication and consistency—not force or fear—to build a horse that is happy and resilient in its work.

How does the training process begin?

It all starts with a conversation.

1. Discovery Call: First, we'll talk on the phone to understand your goals for your horse, their background, and their bloodlines.

2. In-Person Evaluation: We'll meet your horse to assess their temperament and conformation to ensure our program is the right fit.

3. Custom Training Blueprint: Based on our assessment, we'll propose a clear training plan that outlines the timeline, goals, and investment. You get a complete roadmap for your horse's foundational training.

How involved will I be in my horse's training?

We believe in a transparent process. Owners are welcome to schedule visits to see their horse's progress. We also provide regular updates through videos and photos, often on our social media channels. Before your horse goes home, we work with you to ensure you understand the cues and can continue their progress seamlessly.

Your Concerns

Addressing Your Questions and Concerns.

Is my horse ready for your program?

We specialize in unstarted colts and young horses up to 3 years old. The ideal candidate is physically mature enough to begin work and has a temperament suited for performance. If you are unsure, the best first step is to schedule a consultation. We will give you an honest, expert opinion on whether your horse is ready.

What kind of results can I realistically expect?

Our goal is to return a horse that is:

Safe and respectful on the ground and under saddle.

Soft, responsive, and willing to move off of light cues.

Confident and non-reactive in new situations.

Mentally prepared for a career in performance training.

The ultimate result is a young horse with an exceptional foundation and a positive attitude, ready to excel in a specialized discipline.

How do you ensure the safety and well-being of my horse?

The health and safety of your horse is our absolute top priority. We provide excellent care in a safe, clean environment. Our training methods are designed to build confidence and minimize stress. We never push a horse beyond its mental or physical capabilities, ensuring the entire process is a positive, developmental experience.

Logistics & Getting Started

The Final Details

How long does a horse typically stay for training?

For colt starting, we recommend a minimum of 60 to 90 days to ensure a solid, lasting foundation. For 2- and 3-year-olds in for progressive training, the duration is tailored to your specific goals, but often falls within a similar timeframe. We will provide a clear timeline in your Custom Training Blueprint.

What do I need to provide for my horse during training?

Owners are typically responsible for providing their horse's feed and any necessary supplements to maintain their diet. We provide high-quality hay, fresh water, and exceptional daily care and supervision.
